Brigham Young University students will shoulder shovels, brooms and hoes April 8, as they prepare to clean up downtown Provo during the annual Y Day activities.
Several hundred students will be working on projects organized through Mayor Joe Jenkins' office and LeRoy Dennis, director of grounds and maintenance.Projects will include cleaning out planters, removing leaves and trash from vacant lots and gutters, spading flower beds and removing debris from the downtown area.
Some projects will be in the East Bay Industrial Park area.
Linda Walton, executive director of the Association of Involved Merchants, encourages all businesses in downtown Provo to join in on the cleanup project.
"We would like merchants to paint and clean all the winter dirt off the downtown area. We are stressing that trash dumpsters are not being taken care of very well. We want old appliances, old automotive parts and cars removed from the downtown area.
"This is a yearly service project from the students and they do a great job. They do things that city can't afford to do," Walton said.
