Author Eudora Welty received a standing ovation at a Mississippi Symphony Orchestra gala marking her 80th birthday.

In addition to "Happy Birthday," the symphony on Sunday in Jackson performed a concerto that was commissioned especially for the occasion. The idea to honor the author with "Concerto for Orchestra: Images from Welty" came from conductor Colman Pearce.

Welty, whose birthday is April 13, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for her book, "The Optimist's Daughter." Her autobiographical "One Writer's Beginnings" is among her best-known works.
