Emergency workers responding Tuesday to an accident scene were temporarily held at bay by two pit bull dogs, and the animals also rebuffed an animal control officer's efforts to subdue them, police said.

Spanish Fork Police Chief Dee Rosenbaum said one of the accident victims had to put the dogs into a cage.Officers and ambulance personnel tried repeatedly to approach a crash vehicle in Spanish Fork Canyon, but "the dogs would become protective and forced the emergency people to keep away."

The accident occurred about three miles up the canyon at 12:23 a.m. Two men were transported to Mountain View Hospital in Payson.

Brett Knowlton, 25, of Helper, was in critical condition with multiple head and chest injuries, authorities said.

Craig Houtz, 25, of Salt Lake City, was treated for a broken rib and was later released, a hospital spokesman said.
