Turtle Wax Inc. is looking for America's forgotten heroes and is asking people everywhere to nominate friends, relatives, neighbors or colleagues for the Turtle Wax Shining Example Awards.
Denis J. Healy, president of the Chicago car care products manufacturing company, says the awards are designed to honor people who have stuck their necks out to save the life of another person. "These heroes are the very role models that we all should admire and honor," he said.Serving as judges for the Shining Example Awards are America's first man in space, Rear Admiral Alan B. Shepard Jr.; Secret Service Agent Timothy J McCarthy; and former Pittsburgh Steeler great and Vietnam War veteran Rocky Blier.
The national winner and five regional winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony in Chicago during the week of May 22. The winner will receive $5,000 and a commemorative plaque.
To be considered, nominees must have risked their own life to save the life of another. Because of the nature of the award, on-duty police, firefighters and military personnel are excluded. The heroic act must have taken place in 1988.
Nominations of 250 words or less explaining the heroic deed, the people involved and the name, address and telephone number of the nominee and individual making the nomination should be sent to Turtle Wax Shining Example Awards, 111 E. Wacker Drive No. 1700, Chicago, IL 60601. Deadline for nominations is April 15.
