Democrat Glen Browder won a bitterly fought special election Tuesday to fill the congressional seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Bill Nichols, an 11-term Democrat.

Browder, 46, Alabama's secretary of state, and state Sen. John Rice, 37, a convert to the Republican Party last year, were vying to fill the vacancy created by the death of Nichols, 70, on Dec. 13.With 100 percent of the vote counted Tuesday, Browder had 53,031 votes, or 65 percent, to Rice's 28,787 votes, or 35 percent of the unofficial total. The 3rd Congressional District in east-central Alabama includes 13 counties.
