A 42-year-old Swede arrested in December will be charged with the 1986 murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme, the state prosecutor's office said Wednesday.

A statement from the prosecutor's office said a decision in principle had been taken to charge the man because it was considered there is now sufficient evidence against him to go to trial. The prosecutor asked that the man, who under Swedish law cannot be named, be held in custody for a further two weeks while a formal charge was being prepared.
