The son of Sen. Albert Gore Jr., D-Tenn., is in serious condition after he was hit by a car near Memorial Stadium while leaving the Orioles' opening day game, city police say.

Police said Albert Gore III, 6, was trying to cross a street several blocks east of the stadium at 6:25 p.m. Monday when he ran into the roadway and was hit by a car.A witness told police the youth let go of his father's hand as he approached a curb and ran into the street.

The child was in serious but stable condition at the pediatric intensive-care unit of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said the boy suffered a broken rib and left thigh, a ruptured spleen, a bruised lung and a concussion.
