More than 300,000 Hungarian shoppers invaded Austria, causing at least one traffic-related death, mammoth traffic jams and prompting residents of one village to set up a roadblock in protest, police said.

The influx into Austria of some 300,000 west-bound Magyars on Monday, one of the largest single-day totals ever recorded, comes during consecutive Hungarian holidays Monday and Tuesday and before Hungary imposes stricter customs laws on April 8 for homeward-bound Hungarians.Hungarian authorities predicted as many as half a million shoppers would cross into Austria during the 48-hour period to obtain sophisticated Western consumer goods not always available in Hungary.
