NCAA investigators doubt the veracity of Maryland coach Bob Wade's claim that he was ignorant of recruiting violations at the school, The Baltimore Sun reported today.

National Collegiate Athletic Association investigators told members of Wade's staff that they believed Wade knew about transportation for former Terrapins guard Rudy Archer, the Sun reported, citing anonymous sources. The NCAA investigators said they discounted the stories of at least two members of Wade's staff who had backed Wade's contention he was unaware of any rides for Archer while Archer was attending classes at Prince George's Community College, the Sun reported.

Maryland's men's basketball program is being investigated for admitted violations stemming from transportation provided to Archer, who had flunked out of school last summer and was attending Prince George's Community College. This was an NCAA violation because Archer was considered a recruitable athlete.
