Former Texas A&M football player George Smith is denying a newspaper report that Texas A&M paid him "hush money" - again.
Smith told The Dallas Morning News that a Texas A&M official offered him money to publicly recant statements he had made to the newspaper earlier alleging the school paid him to keep quiet about NCAA rules violations. Those allegations touched off a controversy that led to Coach Jackie Sherrill's departure from the school.
"They promised me enough to finish my education, which is all I ever really wanted to do - $30,000, in that neighborhood," Smith told The Morning News in a copyright story published in Saturday's editions.
But in a copyright story in Sunday's Bryan-College Station Eagle, Smith denied making the statement to The Morning News.
"I don't know nothing about that," he said. "I didn't talk to nobody."
The school on Friday released documents of its internal investigation of Smith's comments about Sherrill. Those documents were turned over to the NCAA in February, school officials said.
