Host Louisiana State won the men's Paper Tiger track and field invitational Saturday, with BYU coming in fourth as a team behind four first place performers.
LSU won with 132 points, Southwest Texas was second at 124, Kansas 96, BYU 85, Wisconsin 66 and Virginia 27.BYU sprinter Frank Fredericks won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.51 and the 200 meters in 20.72. Fredericks was joined by teammate Eric Akogyiram as a third place finisher in the 100 meters at 10.6.
Other first place finishers for the Cougars included All-America Ted Mecham in his first steeplechase of the year at 8:57.87, and Shaun McAlmont in the 400 meter hurdles at 51.24.
In the women's portion of the meet, BYU finished fourth in a five-team meet. Three BYU women tracksters picked up first places in their events at the LSU Tiger Invitational Saturday. Lisa White won the shot put with a heave of 45-2 1/2, Cathy James sailed the discus for a 158-9 winning mark, and Georgia Johnson broke the tape in the 800 with a time of 2:13.18.
BYU second places were won by Hui-Chen Lee in the javelin (160-7) and Anna Mosdell in the discus (151-2), while Kelly Delph placed third in the long jump (18-10 1/2).
