Worcester, which is midway between Boston and Springfield, was established as a town on an old Indian camping ground in 1684.

It is the home of the College of the Holy Cross, Assumption College, Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.During Revolutionary days, Isaiah Thomas published the Massachusetts Spy newspaper here, encouraging the move toward independence.

In 1828, a canal connected Worcester with Narragansett Bay and the city grew as an industrial center.

Robert H. Goddard, the father of modern rocketry and space flight, was born here and conducted his first scientific experiments with rockets in Worcester.
