A Salt Lake County man has been booked on charges of automobile homicide into the Juab County Jail in connection with a weekend traffic accident that claimed the lives of a Wasatch County couple.
Arturo Moreno-Santacruz, 28, Taylorsville, is waiting arraignment in 4th Circuit Court, according to arresting Highway Patrol Officer Randy Ingram. The couple killed were Kenneth D. Johnson, 71, and his 76-year-old wife, Sylvia, of Heber. The pair were driving a southbound car that was rear-ended Saturday afternoon by a pickup truck on I-15 in southeastern Juab County.
After being struck, the Johnson's car went off I-15 on the right side and rolled. Kenneth Johnson was ejected from the car but his wife remained inside the vehicle, the officer said.
The pickup then went through the median strip across the northbound lanes and crashed into a cement culvert. Both vehicles were totaled.
Moreno-Santacruz was taken to a Salt Lake City hospital and released Sunday.
