OGDEN - Reed Knute Swenson, 86, former head basketball coach and athletic director at what is now Weber State College, died April 2, 1989, in McKay-Dee Hospital after a long illness.
Swenson attended Provo schools, received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, a master's degree from the University of Southern California and a doctorate from the University of Utah.Mr. Swenson taught and coached at Monroe and Murray High schools before becoming head coach at Weber College in 1933. Four years later he became chairman of the Athletic Council. He gave up coaching at WSC in 1957 to become athletic director. The Reed K. Swenson P.E. Building is named in his honor. He was inducted into the Weber State Athletic Hall of Fame in January and the National Junior College Athletic Hall of Fame, Hutchinson, Kan., in March.
He was president of National Junior College Athletic Association; helped organize and operate recreational programs; trained Navy air cadets during the war; and worked in Scouting and water-safety programs. He was president of the Kiwanis Club and taught Sunday School classes for 13 years to boys at what was then the Utah State Industrial School.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lindquist & Sons Colonial Chapel, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park.
