India will test a long-range ballistic missile later this month, a government official said Monday, and one report said the missile is capable of delivering a one-ton payload a distance of 1,500 miles.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the missile would be launched from the Chandipur-on-Sea range in Orissa state about 745 miles southeast of New Delhi.Newspaper reports have said the missile program was speeded up after neighboring Pakistan tested the missile with a payload of 330 pounds and range of 400 miles.
