QUESTION: Is there a ship, other than a cruise ship, that sails between Miami or vicinity and Nassau, the Bahamas? We plan a vacation in the Bahamas but do not want to fly.

ANSWER: Vacationers willing to head for Freeport (from Port Everglades or Miami) rather than Nassau can travel both ways by sea on the service called SeaEscape (800-327-7400 or, in Florida, 800-432-0900).SeaEscape's Scandinavian Sun sails to Freeport from Port Everglades on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, departing 8:30 a.m. and arriving at about 1:30 p.m. The vessel leaves Freeport for the return trip at 2 p.m.

The Scandinavian Star leaves Miami for Freeeport every day but Thursday at 8:30 a.m., and on the return trip arrives back in Miami at 11 p.m.

On both ships the fare is $99 (and $8 for port charges), round trip, including three buffet meals. The company says passengers can stay in the Bahamas and, provided space is available, return on a later date. Each vessel carries up to 1,150 passengers and has a pool and casino.

QUESTION: Can you tell us if anyone in Ireland provides the services of car with chauffeur, who would drive us where we wished, and what the approximate cost would be?

ANSWER: Some of the rental agencies that supply chauffeur-driven cars for touring have offices in this country and can make arrangements ahead of time.

One is Dan Dooley Rent-a-Car (Post Office Box 340, Colonia, N.J. 07067; 201-381-8948 or 800-331-9301), which has outlets in Cork, Dublin and Shannon and at Irish ferry ports. From May 1 it will also have an outlet in Belfast.
