This year's Deseret News Home and Summer Living Show will be attractive to children as well as adults.
A coloring contest offers youngsters a chance to win a bicycle or other valuable prizes just by coloring the drawing that appears on this page and taking it to the Salt Palace during the show.Sponsored in cooperation with the Home Builders Association of Great Salt Lake, the free show will be combined with the annual Showcase of Homes May 19-21.
Coloring contest entries can be completed with crayons, colored pencils or other media and taken to the Salt Palace from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. May 19; noon to 10:30 p.m. May 20; or noon to 2 p.m. May 21.
A panel of judges will determine the top winners in two categories, ages 3 to 6 and ages 7 to 10. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. May 21.
The winner in each category will receive a bicycle, and runners-up will receive other prizes.
Highlighting the show will be hundreds of informative booths dealing with homes or summer enjoyment.
In addition, stage demonstrations on various subjects, including interior decorating, microwave summer meals, residential lighting techniques, floral arranging and silk flowers, security alarm systems, mortgage financing and the new "no-qualifier" FHA loan, tips for installing your own sprinkler system, and the use of stained glass for today's home, will be offered.
One of the demonstrations will feature a panel of experts from the Home Builders Association Remodeling Council. An architect, remodeler and supplier will answer questions from the audience on remodeling.
An information area set up by the association will feature large colored photographs of 12 new homes constructed by its members. The new dwellings, featured in the organization's annual Showcase of Homes, are located throughout the Salt Lake area.
After visiting the Salt Palace exhibits, showgoers are invited to visit the homes during regular open house activities during the week.
Entertainment will also be featured during the three-day show, including performances by the Saliva Sisters, Rocky Mountain Jubilee, Small World Entertainers, the Peewee Pickers and the Salt Lake Good Time Jazz Band.
