An Orem man charged with killing a 71/2-month-old boy in December 1987 has entered a no-contest plea after earlier pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Thomas Michael Soper, 49, pleaded not guilty in December. He changed his plea pursuant to plea negotiations, however, and will be sentenced April 28.Soper, who was examined twice at the Utah State Hospital, has been found competent to stand trial.

The defendant is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Chad Roy Talk, son of Roy and Lavay Talk, Orem. The child died Dec. 10, 1987, of head injuries suffered two days earlier at a baby sitter's home.

According to police reports, Soper's wife was watching the child and left him with the defendant while she went shopping.
