Two Utah Prison parolees charged with the murder last fall of a Southern Utah State College student in Millard County have been bound over to 4th District Court.
Michael Anthony Archuleta, 26, and Lance Conway Wood, 20, are scheduled for an April 12 arraignment in Fillmore in the beating death of Gordon Ray Church, 28, son of Delta City Councilman David Church and his wife, Nancy.During a Thursday hearing on motions in the case, one sex charge was dropped against Archuleta, who along with Wood is now facing seven counts, including first-degree murder and lesser charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, sex charges including forcible sexual abuse and theft of a motor vehicle.
Archuleta and Wood were parolees when they were arrested in late November. They were charged in the death of Church, who was attending SUSC and whose body was found Nov. 23 in a field near I-70 in southern Millard County.
Following the arrest of Archuleta and Wood, Justice of the Peace Ronald Hare, acting circuit court judge, instituted a gag order prohibiting officers from discussing the case. Some information was released through the Iron County sheriff's office following an interview of one of the suspects, however.
Archuleta and Wood have been held in the Millard County Jail since the arrests.
The preliminary hearing began Jan. 24. The initial hearing was closed to the media and the public by Hare. This brought a storm of protest from the media, particularly the two Salt Lake daily newspapers.
