A man with a rifle burst out of a mobile home Friday, killed a state trooper and a woman the trooper was questioning in his police cruiser, then fatally shot himself in the head, state police said.
The trooper was identified as Detective Giles R. Landry, 36, of Lewiston, a 13-year veteran of the state police and the seventh to die in the line of duty.Landry was parked in the driveway of a mobile home, questioning Barbara H. Wells, 31, of Leeds. David L. Grover, 36, burst out of the mobile home and shot Wells in the head with a hunting rifle, killing her instantly, said state police spokesman Randy Nichols.
Landry was apparently shot as he tried to scramble out of his cruiser. His body was found sprawled on the ground near the door, while Wells's body was found in the cruiser. Grover then shot himself in the head, Nichols said.
