An industrial accident at an animal byproducts plant claimed the life of a young Kearns man early Thursday.

Dean Burningham, 24, 5176 Piper Blvd., was crushed to death about 12:30 a.m. when he apparently backed into and became caught on a chain conveyor belt carrying animal hides from his work area at Salt Lake Byproducts, 9145 Bagley Park Road.West Jordan Police Lt. Kenneth McGuire said Burningham was pulled partially into the machine, which was equipped with hooks and sprockets.

Six employees were in the immediate work area, but none was next to Burningham when the accident occurred, McGuire said. Burningham was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the state medical examiner's office.
