Sal Aunese, the University of Colorado's starting quarterback the past two seasons, will begin chemotherapy treatment nest week for a life-threatening form of stomach cancer, officials announced Thursday.

The cancer, which has spread to Aunese's lungs and surrounding tymph nodes is "inoperable," according to Dr. Wayne Gersoff, an orthopedic surgeon and a CU team physician.Gersoff said the life expetancy of persons diagnosed as having similar forms of cancer "is anywhere from several months, if there is no response to chemotherapy, to several years and even beyond that if there is response to the treatment. Others have had a five-year survival rate."
