Fifth Circuit Judge Robert Owens has found Brent Langston, deputy Washington County attorney, in contempt for refusing to disclose the reasons for dropping misdemeanor charges against a St. George woman.

Owens found Langston in contempt March 14 and Monday ruled there was no legal justification in the prosecutor's refusal to comply with his order to explain why he was dismissing the case against LeAnn Cantrell. The judge ordered Langston to pay a $200 fine.

The ruling stems from the county attorney's office decision not to prosecute Cantrell, 22, on a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Cantrell was arraigned March 6 and was scheduled for an April 5 trial. But March 23 Langston filed a notice of intent to decline prosecution and a motion to dismiss the citation.
