Residents seeking a change in West Jordan's form of government believe they have enough signatures on a petition to call a special election.
The group planned to deliver the petition to the City Recorder Friday afternoon, said former state Sen. Brent Overson, who is the chairman of a group or residents that wants the city to change from a manager/council form of government to a mayor/council form.Overson said the group needed 1,287 signatures to call the election and it collected 1,501.
Overson has said he would like to see the special election take place in the spring so candidates would have plenty of time to prepare for a September primary.
City Manager Ron Olson said he was notified several days ago the petition would be delivered soon. "I've got my people double-checking the parameters of the law so we know what we have," he said.
There are some restrictions about how close the election could be scheduled to the November municipal election, Olson said, adding that the City Council will choose the election date.
