The man charged with kidnapping and sodomizing a West Bountiful girl four years ago pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated kidnapping Tuesday in 2nd District Court in a plea negotiation with the Davis County attorney's office.

But it may be more than 30 years before William E. Denning, 31, begins serving his five-year-to-life prison term in Utah.Denning is now serving a 30-year prison term in Arizona with no parole, defense attorney Steve Vanderlinden told Judge Douglas L Cornaby. And he faces a life term in Nevada after that, Vanderlinden said. That carries no parole review date for at least five years.

Denning is charged with the Aug. 5, 1985, abduction and sexual assault of the girl, then 10 years old, at a rifle range near North Salt Lake. In return for pleading no contest to aggravated kidnapping, the sodomy upon a child charge and a charge of damaging a jail were dismissed.

Cornaby also granted a request by Denning that when he is returned to Utah to serve his time that a court review the sentence.

Aggravated kidnapping is a first-degree felony, carrying a prison term of five years to life with a minimum mandatory term of five, 10 or 15 years. Denning requested a pre-sentence evaluation by Adult Probation and Parole, and the judge set an April 25 sentencing date.
