Canada and the Palestine Liberation Organization held their first official meeting Thursday after the Canadian government lifted its restrictions on high-level contacts with the PLO.

Canadian U.N. Ambassador L. Yves Fortier met with the PLO's second-ranking U.N. diplomat, M. Nassar Kidwa, for about 20 minutes at Canada's U.N. Mission."We reviewed the Middle East question in a very general way," Kidwa said. "The ambassador informed me about the decision to end restrictions on contacts between Canadian officials and the PLO, as well as Canada's endorsement of the principle of self-determination for the Palestinian people."
