Christians Friday mounted a general strike to protest heavy Syrian shelling of their battered enclave around Beirut during the worst clashes in four years in Lebanon's civil war.

Police said civil defense teams evacuated 100,000 more people overnight from heavily populated residential areas in the Dora district. Authorities feared further explosions at a blazing fuel depot.About 50,000 people earlier fled the area Thursday after a Syrian rocket attack caused giant explosions of butane gas that shattered windows for three miles around. Fourteen people were wounded.
