Frank M. Sanguinettsi, director of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, has announced that there will be no merger of the museum with the Salt Lake Art Center. He said that negotiations were constructive and presented exciting prospects for unifying visual arts programming locally. But the challenge was too great at this time.

"The museum must concentrate on its own projects," he said. They include a $3 million addition to the University building, the completion of a $400,000 National Endowment for the Arts Challenge Grant, a demanding exhibition schedule, the expanded educational outread programs and the growth of its 11,000-object permanent collection.Sanguinetti added, "The museum does not have sufficient financial or personnel resources to undertake these internal challenges and do justice to the proposed operations of the Salt Lake Art Center."
