For 17 years, Bess Myerson was a Miss America wanted by Scotland Yard.

Newly discovered records reveal that when Myerson was the city's consumer affairs commissioner, she was arrested for shoplifting in a London department store. The records indicate that in early 1970 Myerson was charged by New Scotland Yard with "theft from a shop." Sources said the scene of the crime was Harrod's, but the records do not make clear exactly what she stole: It might have been an article of clothing, perhaps a small appliance.

What is clear is that she left London with the case outstanding. And it was only in 1987, sources said, that Myerson coughed up a fine of 40 pounds, or about $100.
