To the editor:

Each year since 1933, March 30 has been designated a Doctors' Day to recognize America's physicians. It was on that date in 1842 that Dr. Crawford W. Long, a physician in Jefferson, Ga., first used ether as an anesthetic during a surgical procedure. In the 147 years since then, the practice of medicine has made gigantic strides. We Americans have the privilege of being served by the most advanced and comprehensive health-care system in the world.

The focus now and for the future is more and more on preventive care and cost-effectiveness. Health care professionals, as well as insurers, businesses and consumers, are recognizing the valuable benefits offered by home health care.

On March 30, Doctors' Day, we have the opportunity to honor our community's physicians for their dedication and commitment to the healing profession. Please join us in saying "thank you" to them.
