Wal-Mart Stores Inc., one of the nation's largest retailers with sales of $1.4 billion last February, will enter the Utah market for the first time with construction of a 76,164 square-foot Wal-Mart Discount City store in Tooele that will result in 190 new jobs.

Construction of the new store, which will be located on the east side of Main Street, north of town next to Smith's, will begin in the summer with an expected opening early next year. Omega Development Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., is the project developer."We are very excited about opening the new store in Tooele," said David Glass, Wal-Mart president and chief executive officer. "Wal-Mart plans to be an active member of the community, working with other local merchants to increase retail business in and around the Tooele area," he said.

He said the new facility will be a one-stop shopping center with name brand, high-quality items, all carrying the company's satisfaction guaranteed policy. There will be 36 departments including family apparel and shoes, recreation supplies, toys, major electronics and stereo supplies, health and beauty aids, a garden center and pharmacy.

Glass said Wal-Mart has 1,258 stores in 25 states and the Tooele store is just one of 155 stores the chain will open this year.
