Free garbage pickup and a discount on water service in West Jordan are planned for senior citizens who meet certain minimum age and maximum income requirements.

The City Council is expected to approve an ordinance April 4 that would facilitate the free garbage service and water discount for senior citizens who apply and can prove they qualify according to a formula that will copy a county "circuit breaker" provision. Senior citizens would qualify if they are over 65, make less than $10,000 per year and live on the property they own.The base monthly rate charged citywide for 6,000 gallons of water will remain the same for senior citizens who qualify, but they would not be billed for amounts between 6,000 and 18,000 gallons, said City Manager Ron Olson.

Councilman Paul Henderson said the savings would benefit people living on fixed incomes and would likely offset the cost of a new 6 percent utility franchise tax in West Jordan.
