Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, spent Easter Sunday with sailors and Marines aboard ship in the Persian Gulf at the midpoint of a two-week tour of Europe and the Middle East.

The trip, by members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, was scheduled at the request of Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, committee chairman. Inouye said it was designed to help committee members understand the "dimensions of the problems facing the United States."The senators were scheduled to spend three days in Munich, three days in Rome, three in Istanbul, two in Cairo, three in Jerusalem and one in Madrid.

They left March 18 and will return April 1.

For security reasons no exact itinerary was released, a Garn spokesman said.

The committee was to visit Greece in addition to the cities where they remained overnight.
