National Community Development Week-which emphasizes the importance of Community Block Grant funding - will be celebrated in Salt Lake City beginning on Tuesday.

The block grants are administered by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist cities in developing innovative and constructive neighborhood approaches to improving their communities, said Bob Gore of the city's Capital Planning Department.The grant program plays a critical role in Salt Lake City's efforts to provide shelter for the homeless, day-care for children, along with other programs.

City official will begin Community Development Week with a recognition program at 10 a.m. at the First Step House, 750 W. Fourth North.
