Deputy sheriffs say a South Salt Lake man probably saved the life of a Illinois woman who was assaulted Sunday morning.

The 28-year-old woman visiting from Salem, Ill., told authorities she stepped outside during a party at a Salt Lake County residence about 2 a.m. when a man immediately grabbed her and dragged her by the hair 100 yards into a nearby field.A sheriff's office report said the man beat the woman and continually told her he was going to kill her. In what the report termed "a very heroic act," Troy Rodgers, 22, heard the woman screaming and knocked the assailant unconscious. He took the woman into the house, phoned authorities and then detained the man until deputies arrived.

A 32-year-old Kearns man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on $100,000 bail for investigation of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping in connection with the incident.
