A community group that supports medical research using animals is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students, with the winner to be given a $500 cash award, officials said.

The Committee for Animals in Research and Education in Utah, or CARE-Utah is asking for student submissions on the role humane animal research has played in medical advances.The topic in the group's third annual essay contest is "The Animal-Human Team: Partners in Medical Progress."

Entries for the essay contest will be accepted through April 3, with three finalists to be selected.
