Outgoing baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth is considering buying strike-bound Eastern Airlines with financial backing from entertainment mogul Kirk Kerkorian and may make an offer to Texas Air Chairman Frank Lorenzo soon, pilots union officials said Tuesday. Rick Chapman, secretary treasurer of the executive council of the Airline Pilots Association, said Ueberroth and Lorenzo have met several times in the past few weeks and an offer may be forthcoming. "Obviously, this thing is pretty fragile right now," Chapman said. The Los Angeles Times quoted sources as saying a price of $500 million to $600 million was being discussed. The Times said the deal also would include Eastern's lucrative Washington-New York-Boston shuttle.
