Grant Ross Walker, former Salt Lake fire chief and Utah fire marshal died March 24, 1989, in Bountiful. He was 74.
Walker joined the Salt Lake City Fire Department in 1942 and was a member for 28 years. He was appointed captain in 1956, battalion chief in 1961, chief executive officer in 1966 and fire chief in 1967.After his retirement as chief, he served as state director of fire training at Utah Valley Community College (then called the Utah Technical College at Provo) for several years. He was appointed state fire marshal in 1976 and served in that position until his retirement in 1981.
Walker was also active in the Firemen's Relief Association and Retired Firemen's Association. He was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and the Knights of Pythias, a civic organization.
Funeral will be Wednesday noon in the Bountiful 21st Ward, 650 S. Second East, Bountiful. Friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 S. Second East in Salt Lake City from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday or at the church Wednesday from 10 to 11:45 a.m.
The family suggests donations to the Intermountain Burn Center at the University of Utah.
