Dr. Russel M. Squires, former director of the blood bank at LDS Hospital, died March 22, 1989, in a local hospital after a long illness. He was 50.
Dr. Squires served a residency in pathology at LDS Hospital from 1969 to 1974. For the past 15 years, he worked as clinical laboratory director and director of the blood bank.After graduating from South High School in 1957, Dr. Squires entered the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-med honor society. He graduated from the U. School of Medicine in 1965.
He served his medical internship at Holy Cross Hospital. As a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Squires served in Germany from 1966 to 1969.
He also worked as an associate pathologist at Alta View and Cottonwood hospitals and as director of laboratories at Allied Clinical Laboratories.
Funeral will be March 28 at noon in the Union 27th Ward chapel, 1834 E. Creek Road (74th South), Sandy. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 10600 S. 17th East, and Tuesday at the ward one hour before the service. Burial will be in Larkin Sunset Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Dr. Squires' memory to the Utah Diabetes Foundation, 643 E. Fourth South, Salt Lake City, UT 84102.
