Full military honors will be given Friday for U.S. Navy Cmdr. Gene Albert Smith, who was missing in action 22 years and whose body was recovered and returned to the United States last week.
A funeral for Smith, who was killed in action June 27, 1966, in North Vietnam, will be held at noon in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary chapel, 3401 S. Highland Dr.Burial services, including a "missing man" formation flyover, will be held afterward at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
Smith was born April 18, 1933, in Salt Lake City, to Roland M. and Alene Beckstead Smith. He was graduated from the University of Utah Naval ROTC with a degree in chemical engineering and attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., where he received two additional engineering degrees.
A member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Smith served as formation instructor in Meridian, Miss. He was an elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
