Judge Joseph Wapner, who holds forth on "People's Court," will have to file an appeal if he wants to attend the Academy Awards ceremony.

There are two Wapner stories going around Hollywood and one of them says the judge thought it would be appropriate if he appeared in the show because Dustin Hoffman's autistic character in "Rain Man" makes frequent references to his show.

Allan Carr, who is producing the ceremony, quickly overruled that, telling the Los Angeles Times, "My case rests on Judge Wapner. It's plain and simple. I don't think he's a member of the Screen Actors Guild. I don't think he's been nominated for anything." But a spokeswoman for the judge says there was a misunderstanding and that the judge had only asked for tickets to the show, not to be a part of it.
