A man who stole $25 worth of alms and three silver hearts from a church in central Rome was arrested by police who found him hiding under the parish priest's bed, the ANSA news agency reported Saturday.

The priest called police after he heard a noise in the rectory of the church, known as Santa Maria in Campitelli.Police found the man with the money and the silver hearts in his pockets, which he apparently stole minutes earlier, ANSA said.

The hearts were offerings made to the church by parishioners who sought God's intercession for a special favor.
