A 12-year-old Bountiful girl is credited with saving her brother from a painful experience Thursday when she remembered a first-aid maneuver she learned in school and helped him expel a penny that had lodged in his throat.

April Winters, 12, used the Heimlich maneuver she learned in fourth grade to expel the penny her brother, Adam, 21/2, swallowed Thursday afternoon, said Davis County sheriff's paramedics. The girl first dialed the 911 emergency number to summon help, then went to work on her own, holding her brother next to her chest and squeezing until he coughed up the coin, paramedics said.

Adam had expelled the coin and was breathing and talking when paramedics arrived at the Winters home, 1937 S. 850 East, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
