After sitting in jail for nearly two and a half years, Steven Ray James is scheduled to stand trial on May 1 for the murder of his 3-month-old son.
James, 36, of Logan, has been in the Cache County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond since his arrest on Oct. 23, 1986.The defendant is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Steven Roy James. The trial will be held in the federal court building in Ogden, and 3rd District Judge Pat Brian of Salt Lake City will preside over the hearings.
James told police that the infant had been kidnapped from his car on Aug. 26, 1986. The baby's body was found by duck hunters in the Bear River west of Logan on Oct. 11.
The defendant rallied the support of the community to help find the kidnapped baby. After his arrest, public defenders Nathan Hold and Robert Gutke asked for a change of venue because of all the pretrial publicity.
