Canada will review a report that blamed a buildup of ice rather than an explosion or fire for a 1985 jetliner crash in Newfoundland in which 256 American soldiers and civilians were killed, a newspaper said Friday.

A Transport Ministry spokesman, Rene Mercier, dismissed the report in The Globe and Mail as speculation, but he said Transport Minister Benoit Bouchard would make an announcement on the issue next week. Mercier would not elaborate. The newspaper said Bouchard would announce the review next week as part of a sweeping program to reassure Canadians about aviation safety.
