The BYU Cougars open their home baseball schedule Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Cal Poly-Pomona.
BYU, 13-6 overall, turned in a solid performance last weekend by splitting a pair of doubleheaders with Hawaii in the WAC opener. The split gave the Cougars a 2-2 league mark. They don't return to WAC play until they meet Utah in Salt Lake on April 4.The Cougars have been getting good early-season pitching, which accounts for a decent 4.37 team ERA. Leading the way is right-hander Darin Kracl, who has pitched 27 innings and is holding down a 2.00 ERA and a 4-0 record. The team's two other most-use pitchers are John DeSilva (4-1,,5.52) and Ed Zinter (1-3, 6.05).
Top hitter so far is first baseman Randy Wilstead, who is batting .500 with a team-high 28 RBI, and two homers. Paul Cluff and Brad Eagar are right behind, hitting .446 and .420, respectively.
Pomona is 7-14 and 6-5 going into a pair of doubleheaders Wednesday and Thursday at SUSC.
