IBM has contributed $5,000 to Mountain View Elementary in Salt Lake School District to help students at risk of failing in school. The contribution will be administered by the Salt Lake Education Foundation, said Olene Walker, director.

Mountain View submitted a proposal to the foundation for funding for an early intervention program for math and reading. Barely 60 percent of the school's students scored on grade level in these basic subjects on the Stanford Achievement Test. The IBM-sponsored program will establish a preschool program at the school to increase the readiness of students coming into kindergarten. Kindergarten and first-grade math and reading programs will be enriched. One-on-one volunteer tutoring will be available for students who need it, including computer instruction. Teacher effectiveness will be enhanced through use of volunteers and computers.

The donation will partially fund a paid volunteer coordinator.
