A survey of students in three Salt Lake high schools showed 60 percent of those polled had smoked and 90 percent believed smoking is hazardous to their health, an American Cancer Society spokeswoman says.
Sponsored by the society, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, the survey questioned 1,176 students from Granger High, Cyprus High and Rowland Hall-St. Mark's parochial school, said Lynn Meinor.Of the students surveyed, 134 said they smoked without their parents' knowledge and would like to quit, said Meinor. Those students also said they were influenced by their friends.
Students who said they did not smoke said they were not influenced by peers.
The survey was taken to build interest in the "Smoke-Free Class of 2000 Project", said Linda Stanchfield, an LDS Hospital official.
"Hopefully, the next survey will show that these 134 students have also joined their friends who are smoke free," said Stanchfield.
