Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, met with President Reagan at the White House Tuesday, and won a promise that the president would speak out strongly for America's space program. Garn said afterward, "It was a good meeting. He said exactly what I hoped he would."

Garn was accompanied to the Oval Office by Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., Sen. Ernest Hollings, D-S.C., Sen. Lawton Chiles, D-Fla., and NASA Administrator James Fletcher.Garn did not bring up Morton-Thiokol's objections to a government-owned booster rocket plant with the president. "That would just have muddied the waters," he said.

Garn said Reagan will speak on the space program during one of his Saturday radio addresses or make a major speech on the subject during the next few months.
