The City Council has OK'd a deal for the police department to lease an additional seven fully equipped patrol cars and trade in worn-out vehicles.

The lease agreement for the vehicles, including a maintenance plan from Ford, totaled $102,515 at an interest rate of 7.8 percent. The council Tuesday night unanimously approved Chief John Patience to move ahead with the lease.

"Once that vehicle hits 70,000 or 80,000 miles, it's worn out," said Patience. Six cars will be retired and sold to other agencies to offset the cost.

Council members also approved buying $4,500 worth of computer equipment as part of the centralized emergency response center scheduled to get on line later this spring.

The center will handle police and fire calls for Midvale, Murray, Sandy, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City and the Salt Lake County Fire Department.
